What is a camp counselor?

A counselor is a super hero. Our counselors are fun, outgoing people who enjoy creating a positive camp community. They spend day kayaking, acting on a stage, or hiking throughout the forest, and most importantly creating core memories for themselves as well as the children who look up to them! A strong love for the outdoors is a common value shared among camp staff, as they spend most of their time outdoors. While we make sure every counselor is properly trained for all camp needs, we want our camp to be a fun work environment for all staff as we create a space where all feel welcomed, safe, and look forward to coming to!

There are different aspects of camp that makes up our daily routines– do you really enjoy arts? Consider applying to be an arts & crafts staff, or maybe try your hand in our theatre activities! Really into watersports? Ask us about our waterfront, as we do offer CPR and Lifeguard training to eligible staff members. Maybe you have a preference for sports, and can join our Field Game staff where you can spend the day coordinating games and sports. We try to offer a little bit of everything, feel free to ask about our programming and what a camp counselor might look like for you.

Counselor Openings

NDC’s high-quality returning and new staff are our greatest assets. Come join us and you will participate in a pre-camp, week-long intensive leadership training program. This training program emphasizes the care and well-being of our campers and teaches you quality activities and programming. We will also focus on building relationships with campers, parents, CITs, fellow counselors, directors and other members of the Nichols Day Camp summer community.

Carefully selected and trained, our returning and new counselors ensure that NDC has the best possible role models for our campers and younger counselors.

Counseling is serious business! Ask any parent what it’s like to hand to strangers their most precious loved-ones for the first time. But it can be a lot of fun, too. It provides you with lifelong skills, certainly, but also memories of fun and laughter that will last your entire life. We suggest you go to the Nichols Day Camp Facebook page and “like” it to read what former counselors and campers from 10-50 years ago have to say.

If you are 14 years old you can read about our CIT Program, which is our leadership training program for former campers wishing to become a counselor. Successful CITs  in Session 1 must be 15-years-old and will be considered for employment immediately following training, which means you could potentially be a counselor later this summer! If you will be 14 years old by June 15, 2023 you can enroll in the second session of the CIT Program and be considered for employment the following summer.

Testimonials
There is no better testimonial than a child’s beaming face and that’s what my grandson, 8 years old, had every day he came home from his first summer at Nichols Day Camps. He loved his counselors, made friends, and generally had a blast swimming and playing sports, the things he most enjoys doing. The camp is run efficiently and safely, in a beautiful setting on Walker Pond, with lots of choices in activities rain or shine, and is a real bargain for the happy summers it provides. Sincere thanks to all involved for making my grandson’s summer so wonderful – he wants to come back every year now.
